The Historic, Hilarious Power of Our Teeth
The Bone Guys recently paid a visit to the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, NY. Sides were split, knees were slapped. Good times were had all around.
Call us a little fixated on teeth (duh), but we couldn’t stop thinking about those pearly whites, even amid the peals of laughter generated by exhibits on funny folks like George Carlin, Sarah Silverman, Johnny Carson, Richard Pryor, and Beavis. Oh, and also Butthead.
That must have been due to all the gags we saw that involved teeth. Classic contraptions and various doohickies designed to make us laugh through the ridiculing of people’s chompers.
Here, we review a few of the all-time greats.
Wind-Up Chattering Teeth: Originally named "Yakity Yak Talking Teeth," you know these guys, skittering across the table like your grandpa’s dentures were reanimated and are out for vengeance. Sometimes they come on tiny little feet or bear big bug eyes, sometimes they’re disembodied on a solo mission. Either way, they're always hilarious!
As Famously Seen In: Tim Burton’s Batman, Toy Story, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure
Giant False or Buck Teeth: These notoriously span the gamut from badly crooked dents to massively oversized incisors, giving a funny awkward appearance to a cavalcade of characters from movies and T.V.
As Famously Seen In: Austin Powers, Shrek, Dennis the Menace, The Mask, Frozen, Cars, The Godfather
Lost, Gapped, or Chipped Teeth: Whether it’s a set of dentures soaring out of someone’s mouth or a wide smile with a few of its piano keys missing, teeth often bear the brunt of slapstick hits and pratfalls, or simply find themselves going AWOL. All for comedy’s sake.
As Famously Seen In: Miss Doubtfire, the Hangover,The Rescuers, Hot Shots Part Deux, Yes-Man, Up
Giant Braces and Huge Headgear: What just so happens to be a cosmetic or medical necessity for many people is unreasonably hilarious to the rest of them. Bulky, awkward, glimmering braces and archaic headgear are the focus of many classic comedy characters of the last 20 years, sometimes combined with a lateral lisp in a rib-tickling comedy tag-team.
As Famously Seen In: Joan Cusack in Sixteen Candles, Lisa Simpson, Amy Poehler on Conan, Shelley on South Park, a child patient in Little Shop of Horrors, Anchorman
And speaking of funny teeth stuff... it's time for our monthly comic.
HUMOR HAS IT....

Speaking of oversized teeth, prolific British graffiti artist Sweet Toof uses them as the central focus of his work on the streets and in galleries, covering skate ramps, sculptures, and canvases alike in the large quivering gnashers, gaining a growing fanbase over many years.
